What is an Individual EMDR Intensive?

An EMDR Intensive is a unique way of doing therapy in which the Client meets the therapist for an extended amount of time (usually 3 to 10 hours) in 1 to 2 days. Research shows that this format is more efficient and effective at helping Clients to meet their goals and achieve symptom relief faster (Butler & Ramsey-Wade, 2024).

Tamra Roberts, LMFT utilizes a variety of advanced EMDR skills to help each Client achieve their goals as comfortably and efficiently as possible. Here are some of the therapy modalities that she utilizes:

  • EMDR Therapy

  • Ego States Therapy

  • Attachment Therapy

  • Somatic Therapy

Each EMDR intensive is specially designed for each individual Client and their treatment goals. After a free consultation with your therapist, you and your therapist can determine whether a ½ day, 1 day, or 2-day intensive would meet your needs.

Why is it better than traditional weekly therapy?

  • Faster Symptom Relief: Experience faster and more effective symptom relief by completing the amount of work in a 2-day intensive, that would compare to months of individual weekly therapy.

  • Convenient Time Commitment: Instead of committing to months of therapy in your schedule, you can commit to 2 days of therapy. This is especially helpful to those who travel a lot or cannot meet on a weekly basis.

  • Experience more effective symptom relief: Research shows that most people experience a 60%-90% reduction in symptoms after EMDR treatment and in an intensive format relief is even more effective (Butler & Ramsey-Wade, 2024).

  • Reduce frustration and dropout rate: Research shows that Clients are better able to complete the counseling process in an intensive, as compared to weekly counseling in which Clients can become frustrated and overwhelmed and drop out of therapy (Butler & Ramsey-Wade, 2024).

  • Individually Tailored to your goals and needs: You and your therapist can determine if a ½ day, 1 day, or 2 day intensive would meet your needs and goals.

  • Focus on the root of the issues: In an intensive format, it allows the Client and Clinician to focus on the root cause of the issue instead of focusing on the symptoms that arise in weekly therapy that can distract from dealing with the root of the issues.

  • Reduce Costs: Most people find that investing in an intensive program cost less than what they would spend on weekly sessions over time.

  • More efficient therapy: In an intensive program, less time is spent having to set up the therapy process and wrap up the therapy process at the end of weekly sessions. Longer therapy sessions allows time for the Client to do deeper work and arrive at greater symptom relief.

What is a Group EMDR Intensive?

An EMDR group intensive was developed by Dr. Jareo when a hurricane occurred in 1998 and it was impossible to provide individual EMDR therapy to all the people who were traumatized. Since then, the group EMDR protocol (EMDR-IGTP-OTS) has been research and used in many other settings to successfully reduce symptoms of trauma (https://www.emdria.org/wpcontent/uploads/2020/04/emdr_group_treatment_resourc.pdf.).

This type of group is not a process group, so individual group members DO NOT share their trauma stories with one another. Each member has an individual consultation with a trauma therapist before the group to determine if they are a good fit for the group and what difficult memory they will be working on during the group.

The group meets for two consecutive days. Each day the group meets for 3 sessions, and each session is approximately 1 hour in length. In between sessions the group takes breaks to rest, walk, eat, and care for themselves. Research has found that most people have a significant reduction of symptoms after 6 sessions.

During the sessions the group is asked to draw (focusing on expression and not trying to make the drawing look good) parts of their disturbing memory. Then, they are asked to think about the memory, while also doing a tapping technique called “the butterfly hug” at the same time. The process of focusing on the trauma while also doing the butterfly hug, creates dual attention and helps your brain heal from traumatic experiences.

During the reprocessing you will notice what happens in your body, thoughts, and feelings without judging them or trying to change them. It is common that at the beginning people rarely believe that how they feel can ever change, but EMDR therapy does change the way your brain remembers the event so that the memory no longer contains all the emotional distress connected to it (1995-2023 EMDRIA EMDR International Association).

Why participate in an EMDR Group Intensive?

  • Reduce Costs: Group intensives are especially designed for people who do not want to pay a lot of money for an individual intensive or months of weekly therapy! We charge less than $500 for the entire intensive!

  • No Talking! In a group EMDR Intensive, you do not share the difficult memory that you are working on with the group! Instead of talking, you draw to help your brain reprocess the memory. This might be a great fit for someone who does not want to talk about their trauma.

  • You are not alone! There is comfort and support having other people around you who are working through

  • their trauma at the same time as you. A strong bond does form between group members,
even though their trauma story is not shared with each other.

  • Faster Symptom Relief: Experience faster and more effective symptom relief by completing the amount of work in a 2-day intensive, that would compare to months of individual weekly therapy.

  • Reduce frustration and dropout rate: Research shows that Clients are better able to complete the counseling process in an intensive, as compared to weekly counseling in which Clients can become frustrated and overwhelmed and drop out of therapy (Butler & Ramsey-Wade, 2024).

  • Individually Tailored to your goals and needs: You will have an individual consultation with a therapist before the intensive to determine what past memory you will work on during the intensive.

  • Focus on the root of the issues: In an intensive format, it allows the Client to focus on the root of the issues instead of symptoms that arise in weekly therapy that need to be address and can distract from dealing with the root of the issues.
